BIO-DANCE (Capstone)

Attendance Management System using unique physical identifiers

 Project Overview

The Product

Use the fingerprint to identify, verify and mark the student present/absent for the class, and enrollment and authentication of fingerprints.

Duration

July 2016 - Oct 2016

My Role

Product Researcher with documenting all the required processes.

Responsibilities

Conducting interviews, wireframing, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs. Bring the Idea to the table.

The Problem

  • ID’s

    • Students do not carry ID's at all times

    • Difficult to check ID's during the lecture

  • Time consuming to take attendance manually

  • Errors

    • Errors due to proxies

    • Errors on self-service as it changes the value with one click

  • Security

    • Personal record keeping

    • Identity misrepresentation

Goal

Create an attendance management system that manages the attendance automatically within required systems by using a unique physical attribute.

Attendance on Module and Self-service.

The Problem Reviewing

Project Scope

Build and test the attendance management system for one classroom using the following:

  • TTL (GT- 511C3)

    • Fingerprinting scanner to capture the image

  • Raspberry Pi

    • Processes fingerprint image

The Process

Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi is a low-cost, credit-card-sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. It is a capable little device that enables people of all ages to explore computing and to learn how to program in languages like Scratch and Python. It’s capable of doing everything you’d expect a desktop computer to do, from browsing the internet and playing high-definition video, to making spreadsheets, word-processing, and playing games.

Wireframe

Taking the time to draft the screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements that made it to digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points. I prioritized a quick and easy process to help take biometric attendance and save time.

As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from the user research

Applications Used

Post Release Enhancements

  • Timestamping

    • Notes the arrival time for class

    • Allows ease of use for multiple timestamps

  • Database to store the fingerprints.

    • Synchronizing it with Moodle and Self Service.

  • BETA and Pilot for Falls Church Campus

  • Later for all other Stratford campuses.
